Breakfast is served on the plane before we land in Munich. We pick up our luggage, go through customs and are met outside by our great European team of escort and driver. Then we drive around the outskirts of Munich to Augsburg, site of the historic "Confession" Dinner and overnight (B, D)
Morning sightseeing of Augsburg before we drive on through Duinkelsbuhl and Nordlingen along German's romantic road to charming, medieval Rothenburg-ob-der-Tauber. There is time to explore this wonderfully preserved town with its ancient walls and winding streets. We continue on to the scenic Rhine Area for dinner and overnight. (B, D)
An inspiring day of important Reformation sites and stunning scenery. We board a Rhine steamer for a cruise downstream, passing the famous Lorelei rock, castle ruins, medieval fortresses, vast vineyards, and quaint Rhine-side villages. Time permitting we will visit the Gutenburg Museum and cathedral in Mainz, after which we travel to Worms, where we visit the cathedral and the site of Luther's defense before Kaiser and Empire. Breakfast at our hotel then we travel overland to Marburg, site of Germany's oldest Protestant university. We will visit Marburg where in 1529 a colloquy occurred between Luther, Zwingli and other associates. We continue our journey into history with a visit to the Wartburg Castle in Eisenach, where Luther translated much of the New Testament into German, and the Cotta house where he lived as a student. Dinner and overnight in important Erfurt. (B, D)
A church service after breakfast, then we continue with more sightseeing in Erfurt with a visit to the Augustinian Monastery where Luther lived and in Eisleben to visit the sites of Luther's birth and death. (B, D)
Travel to Wittenberg, site of the beginning of the Reformation. Visit the Castle Church to view the doors where Luther posted his 95 Theses, the city church where he pastored and worshipped, the Luther Halle where he taught and lived and the graves of Luther and Melanchthon. (B, D)
Breakfast at our hotel, then we motorcoach to charming Nurnberg, home of the Meistersinges and Alobrechtg Durer. Cobblestone streets line the historic Old Town. We drive on into the imposing Bavarian Alps near Oberammergau to our village home for the next two nights. (B, D)
Today we will drive to the renowned village of Obergammergau, which houses the Oberammergau Festival House. Over 350 years of tradition unfold today as we thrill to this spectacular presentation of Christ's Last days and Passion, Hundreds of area villagers re-enact these sacred events with austere pageantry in roles that are passed down from generation to generation within families. There is a break in the middle of the performance that allows for a delicious lunch at a local restaurant and some time for browsing through the shops that are known for their beautiful woodcarvings. We will return to our hotel that evening. (B, L, D)
A short two -hour drive takes us to Munich International airport for our flight back to the USA. Meals and light beverages are served aloft as we fly home.
