Continental Dining Customs
Many of you have returned from our tours and told us that the food was good and plentiful, but that every time you would rest your silverware on the plate, in the American custom to pause for a minute, your plate would be taken away. Continental waiters have been trained to remove the plate when they see the silver resting parallel on the plate as a sign that you have finished eating. Their custom of pausing during the meal is to CROSS the knife and fork on the plate. The waiter will not remove your plate when he sees the silver resting in this manner.
